What I got from Jesus is: Guard your home, first priority!
We have a very, very important passage here. Why? Not because Jesus had another miracle to drive out demon. Not because Jesus was willing to put his life to someone he did not know. Why? Because he allowed those demons to go into 2,000 pigs and die, he could be killed by the owner of those pigs.
The most important point I got today is what I did wrong many years ago. I still remember that time when Michelle asked me a horrible question. That should be in 1991, four years after I was ordained as a deacon, three years after I was ordained as a priest and one year because I met my spiritual father Rev.Dr. John Stott. One night Michelle said, "You are always so busy having appointments with so many people. Do I need to make an appointment with you?" I was so shock of what I had been doing the past four years of spending so much time to other people but forgot to guard my home. Wow! Today is the first time the Holy Spirit revealed to me why I had that half an hour of my complains to John Stott when I was having lunch with him in Hong Kong in 1992 that that changed my life. I did not guard my home well because I was so ambitious to make a successful ministry. Satan was smiling when he sees pastors cannot guard their families thinking that they sacrifice all for Jesus including their home, their family! No! No!
You know what happened to this man who was healed by Jesus. Look at verse 3, "This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain." Who did that to this man? Most probably, his family members! So, when he was healed, he did not want to go back to his home because he did not want to deal with his anger, his bitterness, his darkness, his insecurity as well as his family members hatred towards him. But, Jesus did not allow that to happen. Jesus wanted him to face that and deal with that so that he could not make excuses to do the thing he needed to do in the name of following Jesus.
I have seen quite a number of pastors including world renowned ones who cannot guard their home but doing successful ministries. They have poor marriage, poor relationship with their spouses, their children have lots of problems, but no one knows because in the surface they are quite successful. Then, all of a sudden, everything crash! And, another good pastor quit, resign or got into deep mud, deep trouble!
Guard your home, first priority!
Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to know the the Deceiver wants us to neglect our family in the name of serving you more. Lead us to guard our home as first priority. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
